A recent project highlighted our expertise in advanced backup generator design & installation in New Jersey, where we developed a multi-layered power system for a critical facility that required high reliability within a strict budget. For facilities with critical power needs, an outage is not an option. The financial and operational costs of downtime are immense, demanding a power resilience strategy with multiple layers of redundancy. The client’s mandate was to secure their operations against a wide spectrum of power failure scenarios, from common grid faults to prolonged regional blackouts. A standard backup system would not suffice, so they needed a durable, integrated solution that provided multiple levels of redundancy to protect their processes.
Our Multi-Layered Backup Generator Design & Installation in New Jersey
Our team worked in a design-assist capacity with the facility’s engineers to develop a power infrastructure with multiple redundancies. We engineered a defense-in-depth approach to power continuity that included:
Dual Utility Service: We began by establishing a second, independent utility service. This immediately mitigates the risk from the most common outages, which are often localized to a single utility feeder line.
Custom Outdoor Switchgear: At the heart of the system, we integrated a complex outdoor switchgear. This custom unit acts as the intelligent hub, safely managing power from multiple sources and routing it where it’s needed. Its durable, outdoor-rated, and arc-resistant design protects it from both environmental hazards and internal faults, safeguarding personnel and the equipment itself.
Stationary Generator with Multiple ATS: For widespread grid failures, we installed a primary stationary generator to provide on-site power. This system was integrated with multiple Automatic Transfer Switches (ATS). Rather than a single switch for the whole facility, this segmented approach allows for prioritized restoration of power to the most critical circuits first, ensuring a stable and controlled startup.
Mobile Generator Connectivity: To provide an additional layer of resilience for an extreme event, such as the primary generator needing maintenance during a long-term outage, we designed the custom switchgear with a manual connection point for a 1MW mobile generator. This was achieved by installing a generator docking station and a manual transfer switch, providing a safe and rapid way to connect a rental unit without the high capital cost of a second permanent generator.
The Result: Total Power Resilience
The result is a power system that fully addresses the client’s operational needs and strategic wants. By layering multiple, redundant power sources and managing them with a custom-engineered switchgear, the facility is now protected against a wide range of potential power disruptions. This project demonstrates our ability to deliver complex, value-engineered solutions that provide high reliability within a client’s budget.
